Come With Me

“Come with me,” she said, and on her face I read a smile
And in her voice I heard a promise from the past.
“Certainly,” I answered, and I followed her in stride, fully certain some relationship would last.
I’m gonna miss her very much because that lady had some hold
That was stronger than I’d ever felt before
But I fear I must survive living memories for now,
Until sweet winds bring her smiling to my door.

“Come with me,” she asked, “you don’t expect I go alone
“The hour is late, the night is dark, and I’m afraid.”
Silently I nodded and we walked out side by side
And I realize this was how my dreams were made.
As we stepped into the night, I felt a kindness in her way
That made me long to keep things as they were right then
I didn’t want to be alone, I never dreamt I’d have to leave
For I may never meet someone like her again.

“Come with me,” she said, “Can’t you see, The mysteries of life have all been taken.”
Yet I recall, in the early fall, a postcard told me she has been mistaken.

“Come with me,” I joked, if it was any more a pun, an invitation of a love we meant to share
“Come with me,” I pleaded though my words fell on deaf ears
The hope of mutual attraction and affair.
I know it would have grown in time, I’d never been so self-assured
But as always it was time for me to part.
And if we chance to meet again can we pick up where we left off
Will the seeds of love endure within her heart?

“Come with me,” I offered, willing to accept the risks
And for the first time in my life I was sincere
“I’d love to go,” she answered, “but I’m not now free to choose,
“You see I’ve promises to keep that keep me here.”
And in her way I saw a sadness, when I left I know she cried
Though she tried her best to hide behind a smile
As we exchanged destinations, it was hard to comprehend
That I wasn’t going to see her for a while.”

“Come with me,” she said, “Can’t you see, The mysteries of life have all been taken.”
Yet I recall, in the early fall, a postcard told me she has been mistaken.
